Jerry, that is a truly sad story. It sounds like these two accidents happen in the open. My question is, what if I'm in the woods (typical for me) and the tractor tips into a tree or a boulder. I may be in my seat but unable to react or be pushed aside because I'm restrained and therefore crushed, by whatever object was in the way. This may be a weak argument but it does concern me.

Well Dave, do you think that I'm thinking big enough w/ a JD1070. I'm not sure of the gross wt. but it can't be as much as that ford. I have a farmiJL351P and it's only rated for 40HP pto. I'm also not sure of the lifting power on it's 3pth. I would hope at least 2000lbs. My next round of logging will incorporate 200ft of uphill travel on a fairly steep grade. I realize that front weights might be in order. I probably can't afford more than 40 hp unless I go to a well used machine.

Paul, It sounds like your differential is working correctly but I'm no expert. If one rear tire is spinning and you step on the lock diff lever and then let go, as soon as you gain traction the lock releases. When I'm in a real greasy situation some times I hold the lever down for 5 or 10 seconds. Until I'm clear of the problem and have some headway speed. I have ag tires though and if you have turfs, It's possible that even this approach won't help. If you were trying to corner during the maneuver results of course would probably be unfavorable as well.

Bud, Thanks for your insights. I am looking at the JD1070 tomorrow. It's 3 hrs. away so I hope I'm not wasting my time. He actually has 2 machines almost identical. The one with 250 more hrs. is $500. less and has hyd hookups(not sure of proper name) in the back which I could use for a york rake, I own, set up for hyd. tilt. Any Idea what this feature is worth in $. Also, one of the machines may have a mid pto setup. I'm not clear whether this is an extra or if both machine came that way as a normal stock item. Maybe you or some one else could answer this or direct me to a link w/ 1070 specifics. I tried to find a jd brochure at a dealer w/ no luck. Although I've learned a good deal from this site. A JD dealer actually gave me that $ figure for the clutch replacement on a 1070. It sounded like a lot but how would I know, He's the dealer. One last ques. Anyone know if the rims for a 970 fit the 1070. I'm getting conflicting info. This site has been great.
